Base Oil Group 2 SN 500 for Lubricant manufacturing
The main purpose of lubricants is to decrease the friction between two surfaces that are in touch with one another. By doing so, lubricants also assist in decreasing the heat produced as the surfaces move.
The vital force of friction keeps everything from moving all the time. However, it has its place and its time, and none of those are right now (especially if you’re already late for work and it’s below freezing outside) when it comes to stopping your car’s engine from moving.
In order to boost productivity, we can work against friction thanks to the enigmatic substances known as lubricants. A good lubricant may be able to heat or cool surfaces in addition to moving force and foreign objects.
They serve a range of functions but are most frequently utilised in industrial applications, which is our area of expertise. Other frequent uses include lubricants for prosthetic limbs, cookery (think non-stick spray), ultrasonography tests, medical examinations, and personal lubricants. The objective in each of these scenarios is to lessen friction.
Base Oil Groups
Nowadays, basic oils are the source of almost all industrial lubricants.
There are 5 categories for base oils according to the American Petroleum Institute (API). Groups I through III are made up of base oils that are derived from crude oil (mineral oil); Group IV base oils are entirely synthetic; and Group V is made up of all other base oils that are not part of Groups I through IV.
Group I
These base oils have an SAE viscosity index range of 80 to 120, less than 90% saturates, and greater than 0.03% sulphur. A 32 to 150 F operating temperature range is used. These basic oils are the least expensive ones available since they were refined using solvents, a less complex refining method.
Group II
Group II base oils are those with a V.I. of 80 to 120, more than 90% saturates, and less than 0.03% sulphur. In contrast to solvent-refining, hydrocracking is frequently used to produce these base oils. Compared to Group I base oils, these oils offer better antioxidation qualities and clearer color.
Group III
These base oils have a viscosity index above 120, more than 90% saturates, and less than 0.03% sulphur. Group III base oils are purer than Group II base oils because they are more refined than Group II base oils and often undergo severe hydrocracking (higher pressure and heat).
Group IV
Polyalphaolefins are the name for these basic oils (PAOs). They are created synthetically by the process of synthesising. PAOs are excellent for usage in applications exposed to extreme cold and/or high heat since they have a wider temperature range.
Group V
Group V is the umbrella term for all additional base oils that do not fit into any of the previous categories. Examples include silicone, phosphate ester, polyalkylene glycol (PAG), polyolester, and biolubes. To improve the qualities of the oil, these base oils can be combined with other base stocks.
Depending on their composition, these oils can be further divided into paraffinic, naphthenic, and aromatic groups.
Prior to selecting a lubricant, be sure it can withstand the temperature range and operating conditions for which it will be used. This is particularly crucial when choosing a base oil.
Considering that appropriate lubrication is essential to maintaining your equipment, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
To choose the right oil, see your vehicle owner’s handbook or get advice from a professional.
