Cooling pads and water chillers for hydroponic and UAE green farms

We gardeners are born tinkerers. We’re constantly looking for ways to make our gardens better. We are constantly attempting to learn and implement new things, whether it is gardening techniques or garden operations.

We have complete control over our plants’ environmental parameters, including root zone temperatures, because we are their masters. Providing proper root zone temperatures, though sometimes underestimated, is an excellent approach to improve plant performance and yield.

One of the most efficient ways to decrease root zone temperatures in your garden is to use a water chiller or cooling pad. While water chillers are most commonly employed in hydroponic applications (DWC, RDWC, NFT, flood, and drain), they can also help soil and other solid media plants by providing oxygen-rich, stable nutrient temperatures.

Understanding how root zone temperatures effect plant production is essential to understanding how cooling pads and water chillers can assist your garden in the UAE.

Water Chillers and Root Zone Temps

Water chillers control the temperature of nutrient solutions in the ideal range (65-70°F). This ideal range enables for high levels of dissolved oxygen to reach the root zone while also bolstering disease resistance.

The ability of a nutritional solution to hold dissolved oxygen decreases as the temperature of the solution rises. The amount of oxygen available to the root zone is reduced in this low-oxygen environment, resulting in slower development and poor plant performance.

Low-oxygen settings, when combined with high temperatures, create excellent circumstances for hazardous diseases like pythium to establish themselves in a garden.

Water Chiller Overview

Water chiller technology, like other technologies in the ever-improving hydroponic industry, has gone a long way. Consumers have access to a variety of low-cost, high-efficiency choices. The days of having to rely on expensive aquarium-specific chillers are long gone. With so many options, it’s critical to select the proper water cooler for your garden’s demands and performance expectations.

Water chillers and water pumps function together. The mechanics naturally heat the nutrient solution as it circulates around the system/reservoir. This solution is then pumped into a water chiller, where it is chilled to the correct temperature by passing through cooling coils. This cooled solution is then pumped back into the system, resulting in perfect temperatures for rapid root growth and disease prevention.

Sizing

The following is a basic method for sizing a water cooler for your garden:

  1. Determine the overall volume of your system (nutrient reservoir and any bucket systems)
  2. Turn on all of the lights, fans, pumps, humidifiers, and other equipment in the growroom and allow it to achieve its maximum temperature.
  3. Cool the system/reservoir with ice packs as the system runs once the growroom and fertiliser solution have achieved maximum temperature.
  4. Remove all of the ice packs from the system and let it run for another hour. Take note of the ending nutrient temperature after one hour has passed. Subtract the starting and ending temperatures, then plug the results into the formula devised by Kevin Espiritu of Epic Gardening: minimum BTU per hour required = total system volume in gallons x 8.34 (set weight of water) x starting and ending temperature difference

Pros

  1. Increased dissolved oxygen levels: The cold temperatures offered by water chillers may store more dissolved oxygen, which is necessary for rapid root growth and nutrient uptake.
  2. Reduced risk of deadly infections: Many of the dangerous diseases that might overwhelm a garden are deterred by cool, highly oxygenated surroundings.
  3. Heatsink: A cold solution can operate as a heatsink, absorbing and cooling heat generated in growrooms.
  4. Changing technology: Gardening-specific water chillers are flooding the market, and they’re getting better all the time. Water chiller technology is also seen in water cooled fans, reflectors, and CO2 producers, some of which claim to be 50% more efficient than air conditioners.

Cons

  1. Heat: Water chillers, like any other operational equipment, generate heat. This necessitates their placement outside of the growroom or the fabrication of bespoke heat exhaust ducting.
  2. Cost: Water chillers are still an investment, despite the fact that they are becoming more affordable. Some growers may struggle to justify the additional costs of purchase and operation.
  3. Noise: The majority of the tools we use in the garden produce noise and vibrations. Water chillers aren’t any different. Because they must be positioned outside the growrooms, their loudness may be amplified much more.

Alternatives to Using Water Chillers & Cooling Pads

You’re still unsure? It’s possible that water chillers aren’t the best choice for your landscape. Here are a few low-cost options for keeping root zone temps cool.

Packs of ice Ice packs are a convenient and inexpensive way to cool a specific area. While they are excellent for single reservoirs, they may fall short when it comes to cooling large systems. They also take time to adjust and are susceptible to root shock if temperatures are too chilly. Because ice packs have a limited chilling lifespan, make sure you have plenty on hand.

White: It’s common knowledge that white reflects light, which minimises heat absorption by converting light energy to heat. By painting reservoirs and any bucket system white, growers can take advantage of this occurrence. When combined with other heat-reduction techniques, this strategy can be an effective way to combat heat.

Using a remote reservoir to reduce root zone temperatures is a fantastic approach to reduce root zone temperatures. Any nutrition solution will quickly heat up in the growroom because to the ambient conditions. Indoor reservoirs can be conveniently positioned outside the growroom. Outdoor reservoirs, as well as any return lines, can be buried.

Every grower, whether hydroponic or soil, should pay close attention to root zone temperatures. Because they are one of the finest ways to boost plant performance, water chillers are one of the most effective ways to achieve appropriate root zone temperatures. Experiment to see what works best for you and your garden—what we growers are greatest at.
