One of the main advantages of using a plate type heat exchanger in a water chiller is that it provides a large surface area for heat transfer. The plates are typically made of stainless steel or another corrosion-resistant material, and they are arranged in such a way that the fluid flowing through the chiller is in contact with as much surface area as possible. As for the refrigerant, some refrigerants like propane (R290) and ammonia (NH3) can be used to achieve low temperature and fast cooling, but their use comes with its own set of considerations, like safety, and handling regulations.

In a typical water chiller with a plate type heat exchanger, the refrigerant is compressed by a compressor to a high-pressure, high-temperature vapor. This vapor then flows through the evaporator, which is a section of the heat exchanger consisting of a series of plates with a large surface area. As the refrigerant vapor flows through the evaporator, it absorbs heat from the water or water-glycol mixture flowing on the other side of the plates. This causes the refrigerant to boil and evaporate, creating a low-pressure, low-temperature vapor.

The low-pressure vapor then flows through a condenser, which is another section of the heat exchanger. In the condenser, the vapor gives up its heat to the surrounding air or water and condenses back into a liquid. The cooled liquid refrigerant is then returned to the compressor to begin the cycle again.

Water chillers with plate type heat exchangers can be used in a wide range of applications, including process cooling, air conditioning, and refrigeration. They can be found in industrial facilities, commercial buildings, and even residential applications.
