Composition : Lubricating greases basically are composed of a thickener (10 to 15 percent), base oil (80 to 90 percent) and performance additives (5 to 10 percent). The main components of lithium soaps are lithium stearate and lithium 12-hydroxystearate.[Majority lubricating greases are consists of lithium/lithium complex, calcium, sodium, aluminum/aluminum complex, calcium sulfonate, clay based, polyurea, etc. Lithium based greases are most commonly used  covering 75 percent market share globally .

Comparison of Calcium versus Sodium versus Lithium Multipurpose Grease

Calcium Grease provide good level of protection against water as calcium is water resistant but they are having low drop point and operating temperature range is less than 100 C . However , Sodium Grease have higher drop point and are used in wheel bearings with higher operating temperature range of 120 C+ but they lack in water resistance . On other hand , Lithium Grease combines benefits of both Calcium and Sodium grease with high level of protection against water , shear and extreme pressure with higher operating temperature conditions and drop point . Grease made with lithium soap  adheres particularly well to metal, is non-corrosive, may be used under heavy loads, and exhibits good temperature tolerance. Comparison of Lithium Complex versus Calcium Sulfonate Grease

Lithium-complex greases exhibits good stability, high-temperature and water-resistance properties. Other performance requirements like extreme pressure, anti-wear, rust and corrosion are improved by adding suitable additives. Calcium-sulfonate greases out-perform lithium-complex greases and the most important difference between these two types of grease is that calcium-sulfonate greases do not typically need additives to meet certain performance requirements like lithium-complex greases do.Calcium-sulfonate greases exhibit superior mechanical and shear stability compared to lithium-complex greases, indicating less leakage and run-out during operation. Calcium-sulfonate thickeners have inherent extreme-pressure and anti-wear propertiesin addition to natural rust inhibitor quality.

Water resistant property of Lithium Complex greases are fortified using Tackifiers which are prone to deplete in presence of water however calcium sulfonates have naturally excellent water-resistant properties.Calcium-sulfonate grease can also be applied in more types of industries compared to lithium-complex greases, thus making it the preferred choice for a high-performance multi-purpose grease.
