PFMB, or poly film moisture barrier and Polysurlin Moisture Barrier (PSMB) on Aluminium coils.
Since most people commonly think of corrosion in the industrial sector when they think of pipes, they are often aware of the risks that arise from corrosion under insulation (CUI). Many people neglect the inside surface of the metal jacketing while discussing corrosion. Corrosion can and does happen when water is present in a jacketed insulation system and comes into contact with the inside surface of the metal jacketing. In all situations (hot and cold), with all metal jacketing types, and all insulation kinds, this form of corrosion on the internal surface of insulation jacketing is a hidden, serious, and expensive problem. The jacketing system becomes weaker as it corrodes from the inside, which can lead to increased water intrusion or damage to the insulation, vapour barriers, or pipes below the jacketing.
There are five factors that make PFMB superior to paint or polykraft moisture barriers as a corrosion preventative for metal jacketing systems.
- PFMB is 3 layers thick: While paint and polykraft are both formed of a single layer of material, PFMB is constructed from three different layers of HDPE and LDPE. Each of these layers is made to be scratch-resistant and to prevent pinholes from forming, which could lead to water seeping through to the jacketing.
- Zero pinholesThe ASTM C1785 test is designed to determine the number of pinholes per 50 square feet of moisture barrier employed on jacketing interiors. Polykraft normally has roughly 16 pinholes, whereas paint typically has more than 19 pinholes. PFMB, in contrast, has no pinholes. This significantly lessens the possibility of corrosion occurring when water comes into touch with the internal surface of the metal jacketing.
- Scratch-resistant: Compared to paint or polykraft, PFMB is significantly more scratch-resistant due to its three layers of thickness. Three-layer thick PFMB gives significantly more durability than paint, which is readily scratched off, or polykraft, which is easily torn. A scratch-resistant surface can be a crucial component in industrial applications where materials need to be durable and long-lasting to safeguard your metal jacketing system.
- Excellent adhesion to the substrate: The metal jacketing substrate and PFMB are heat-laminated at the manufacturing. It will be less likely to peel or flake off while in use because of the great adherence it provides to the metal surface. A vulnerability where water can enter is created if the moisture barrier lining the jacketing separates from the metal substrate.
- Low water-vapor transmission rate: PFMB has a water vapour transmission rate (WVTR) of less than 0.05, in contrast to a polykraft barrier that has a WVTR of roughly 1. Additionally, unlike polykraft, PFMB doesn’t have the ability to absorb water because it doesn’t contain any paper in its manufacturing. Using materials that prevent water penetration can be crucial to properly safeguarding your jacketing system because the goal is to prevent water from coming into contact with the surface of the jacketing.
By acting as a barrier to stop crevice, pitting, and galvanic corrosion, PFMB offers straightforward, inexpensive, and efficient protection against metal jacket and pipe corrosion. The moisture barrier must be water-resistant, pinhole-free, robust, scratch-resistant, and durable to prevent water from creating corrosion in the jacket and pipes. Only PFMB has all of these essential qualities while also being affordable and simple to use.
POLYSURLYN MOISTURE RETARED
The internal surface of Polysurlyn, a very effective moisture retarder, is heated and pressure-bonded to a polyethylene sheet with a thickness of 50-200 um. Polysurlyn Moisture Barrier is heat bonded to the inside surface of all forms of metal jacketing in the factory to assist prevent pitting, crevice, and galvanic degradation of the inner appearance of the metal jacketing and the underlying insulated pipe, tank, or equipment. Through seams or damage to the metal jacketing, water can get into the installed insulation system, which leads to the development of corrosion.Polysurlyn is manufactured from layers of film: 1 mil high-density polyethylene and 1 mil low-density polyethylene. With careful pressure and heat, this multilayer sheet is laminated to the inside side of the aluminium and stainless steel jacketing. By using three layers of 3 mil thick Polysurlyn Moisture Barrier (PSMB) film instead of the more common single layer of 1 mil Polykraft Moisture Barrier, pinholes are prevented. Corrosion is a possibility and does happen when water is present and touches the metal jacket. This can occur with any type of insulation and in any application (hot, cold, rooftop, commercial, etc.).
Polysurlyn moisture barrier has advantages:
1, Simple, inexpensive, and efficient resistance against pipe and metal jacket corrosion;
2, In cold and hot pipe/tank applications, provides a barrier to crevice or pitting corrosion on the inner jacket surface;
3, acts as a barrier against the jacket or pipe’s galvanic corrosion in hot situations;
4, Less water absorption than kraft paper;
5, Won’t lose quality, turn yellow, or tear when exposed to water;
6, offers protection against abrasion during installation;
7, Long-term reliability and immunity to numerous environmental toxin
